"Jindai-moku" (ancient buried wood) refers to trees buried underground by volcanic eruptions and similar events. Over hundreds to thousands of years, the wood gradually transforms in color — from its original tone, through brown, to dark grey, and finally to black.

The walnut used here is "hai-jindai" (grey buried walnut) — a relatively lightly colored variety that has retained much of the walnut's original beautiful grain.

Walnut is naturally a relatively soft wood with a warm, gentle color — and it has a certain tactile warmth to it as well. Originally a somewhat heavy wood, it becomes lighter through the jindai process, resulting in a grip that resists fatigue even during extended sessions.
